Sunrise Today...

There is something magic about seeing the full moon rising over the horizon

I am lucky in having the moon rise almost ahead of my home, viewed from the back verandah, but in May, the rising location has changed  to North East..and now the moon rises behind a tree, which means I have to hang out through windows or simply go out into the garden. I also now miss the moonrise, unless I am actually out there waiting for the moon as I don’t see it behind the huge gum tree that the neighbor wants cut down because she thinks it will blow down on her house.

Good moon views are best when the sky is unencumbered with clouds, and you have a clear view of the moon directly. The heavens must have a lot of movement as when there are clouds there, they are continually moving across the moon creating shadows and shapes as they glide over and around the moon.

The full moon of the 18th May is called the Flower Moon in America according to The Farmers Almanac. However in the UK, …”This makes May’s month’s full Moon the Blue Moon according to the Maine Almanac definition.”  Tonight, Saturday, May 18, the last Blue Moon of the year will cross the night sky. The Moon will reach the peak of its brightness at approximately 10.21pm BST, so be sure to glance out of your window this evening. This Moon is also known as the May Flower Moon, which is the name given to each May Full Moon.

THIS EVENING a Blue Moon will light up the night sky, but what is a Blue Moon? How often do Blue Moons occur?

Tonight, Saturday, May 18, the last Blue Moon of the year will cross the night sky. The Moon will reach the peak of its brightness at approximately 10.21pm BST, so be sure to glance out of your window this evening. This Moon is also known as the May Flower Moon, which is the name given to each May Full Moon.

What is a Blue Moon?

The term “once in a Blue Moon” is often used to describe a rare event or occurrence, and this is similar to tonight’s Moon.

There are two definitions which are described by the term Blue Moon. One is used to describe when two Full Moon’s appear within one calendar month, and the Blue Moon is the second of these to grace the skies.

Usually, a Blue Moon marks the second time a full moon rises within the same month. But the full moon arriving on Saturday (May 18) is May’s first full moon, so why are people calling it a Blue Moon?

The answer has to do with an obscure rule, according to Space.com, a sister site of Live Science.

In this case, the May 18 moon — also known as the Full Flower Moon — is called a Blue Moon because it’s No. 3 of four full moons in a single season. Usually, seasons have only three full moons apiece, Space.com reported.    https://www.livescience.com/65514-may-blue-moon.html

My photos have been taken with a Canon Camera. I do not use a tripod. Canon is great for moon photography and you can zoom to where you feel comfortable with the image shown on the display. If you use a tripod, you will capture the detail and beauty of the Moon clearly with a Canon camera
